Special religious education

A feature of the public education system in NSW is the opportunity to provide time in class for education in ethics, faith and morality from a religious or non-religious perspective at the choice of parents.

A special religious education (SRE) program is available at STHS and is run by authorised volunteers of approved religious persuasions. This takes place in one period on a Tuesday in either Week 7 or 8 each term at the school.

Below is the list of approved SRE programs provided at the school:

  1. Christian Studies - provided by Churches of Christ in NSW (Fresh Hope), following the Think Faith curriculum
  2. Catholic Scripture - provided by the Catholic Diocese of Sydney, following the Christ Our Light and Life curriculum
  3. Greek Orthodox Scripture - provided by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, following the curriculum of the Pantanassa Monastery
  4. Islamic Studies - provided by Australian Islamic Education Services (AIES), the curriculum can be viewed here
  5. Hindu Studies provided by the Hindu Council of Australia

On enrolment at STHS, the Year 7 parent/carer will be given the SRE participation letter to complete and return to the school. The parent/carer may at any time notify the school in writing that they wish to change their decision. Students will continue the same arrangement as the previous year, unless a parent/carer has requested a change in writing.

Students not attending SRE will be supervised by STHS teachers and take part in meaningful activities, specifically an extension READ session.
