BACKGROUND

Sydney Technical High School is an academically selective public school for boys, located in Bexley NSW. The school has a capped number of students, as determined by the NSW Department of Education. Each year, applications are invited for new students to fill any vacant places in Years 8-11 for the following year.  The number of vacant places varies each year depending on availability, as new students will be considered for enrolment ONLY if a current student leaves the school.

 

APPLYING FOR SELECTIVE SCHOOL FOR YEARS 8-11

You must send a SEPARATE application to each of the selective high schools in which you are seeking enrolment.

TESTING IS REQUIRED for 2023 entry into Years 8-11 at Sydney Technical High School. Applicants will sit a Higher Ability Selection Test (HAST), run by an external company, the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER).

 

THE APPLICATION PROCESS

You can apply either online (preferred option) or in person. Prior to completing your application, please note the following:

PAYMENT

The application must be accompanied by payment of either:

  • $100 non-refundable application fee if Sydney Technical High School is your first preference (the application fee pays for the setting and marking of the test by ACER and for the supervision of the test on Saturday 6 August 2022 by external invigilators)  OR

  • $40 non-refundable application fee if Sydney Technical High School is your second or third preference, and the first preference is one of the following listed schools, who are coordinating their entrance test procedures with Sydney Technical High School:

  • Baulkham Hills High School

  • Caringbah High School

  • Fort Street High School - Year 11 only

  • Girraween High School

  • Gosford High School

  • Hornsby Girls High School

  • Hurlstone Agricultural High School

  • Northern Beaches Secondary College Manly Campus

  • North Sydney Girls High School

  • Penrith Selective High School 

  • St George Girls High School

If your first preference is not listed above, then you must pay the $100 application fee, and attend the test at Sydney Technical High School on Saturday 6 August 2022.

STUDENT DETAILS:

Student given name - enter the student's first name      

Student family name - enter the student’s last name

Student date of birth - enter the student’s date of birth 

Student year or class name - enter the year you are applying for eg Year 10 2023 

Student registration number - leave blank 

Student invoice reference number - leave blank 

Click - ‘Next’ 

CONTACT DETAILS:

Your given name - enter the parent’s first name

Your family name - enter the parent’s last name

Your email address - enter your email address

Re-enter your email address to confirm - retype your email address

Additional email address (optional) - if you would like your receipt emailed to an additional address, add it here

Your phone number - add your best contact number (mobile preferred)

Click - ‘Next’

PAYMENT DETAILS:

Payment type - click drop down and select ‘Other’

Payment description - Year XX 2023 application (e.g. Year 10 2023 Application)

Payment amount - enter the amount you are paying, either $100 or $40 depending on application preference

Click - ‘Next’

Confirm all details are correct, then click ‘Next’ 

Card Details - enter credit card details as requested on screen 

Click - ‘Submit’

Once confirmed, please make a note of your payment receipt number as you will be required to enter this on to the Online Google Application Form or your in-person application.

Payment is non-refundable.

 

SUBMITTING YOUR APPLICATION 

Applications must reach the school by Friday 22 July 2022 at 3.00pm. Late applications will not be accepted. 

Select only ONE of the following options to submit your application:

 

  • Submit via Google Docs using the following link (PREFERRED OPTION):

Payment must be made prior to completing this form as the receipt number needs to be included on the form.  Forms submitted without the receipt number will not be accepted. The form must be submitted by Friday 22 July 2022 at 3.00pm.

If you are applying online, please save the completed DoE High Performing Students Team Application Form as a .pdf document and upload it with your other documentation as directed.

 

  • Submit in person:

Applications must be submitted by Friday 22 July 2022 at 3.00pm. Applications may be handed in at the school reception, 686 Forest Road, Bexley (park in Anderson St and walk around to Forest Rd gate) in a sealed envelope during 21-24 June 2022, 27 June-01 July, and 18-22 July 2022 between 8.30am – 3.00pm (school term office hours). Payment can be made in person at time of submission, but must be made prior to 1.30pm.

If you are applying in person or by mail, please print and complete the High Performing Students Team application form as well as the Years 8 - 11 Sydney Technical High School Application Form, and include them in your application.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF APPLICATION

Receipt of your application and payment will be acknowledged by Sydney Technical High School in writing by post.

Applicants will be assessed by a panel, and those who are shortlisted for an interview will be contacted by the school.

Students who are offered placement will be notified in writing by post as places become available.   

Students who are unsuccessful in their application will be notified in writing by post.        

 

HIGHER ABILITY SELECTION TEST (HAST)

If your first preference is Sydney Technical High School, or your first preference is NOT one of the schools coordinating their tests (as listed in 2. PAYMENTS section), students will sit the HAST at Sydney Technical High School on Saturday 6 August 2022 commencing at 9:30am.

The test will be conducted in the auditorium. Please park in Anderson St and walk around to the Forest Road gate to enter the school. Follow the signs to the auditorium, which is located adjacent to the Forest Road carpark. Students should arrive 30 minutes prior to the test commencing, and bring with them:

  • two HB or B pencils for the multiple choice tests 

  • a good quality eraser 

  • a pencil sharpener

  • two blue or black pens for the Written Expression test

  • a water bottle

It is expected that the test will take approximately 3 hours 20 minutes.

 

 

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

 

Q: Am I eligible to apply for a place at Sydney Technical High School?

To be eligible to apply for Sydney Technical High School, there are a number of criteria you must meet:

ACADEMIC MERIT

In determining academic merit for an offer of placement, the Selection Committee will consider the following criteria:  

  • Applicants performance in the HAST which assesses reading, written expression, mathematical reasoning and abstract reasoning

  • Academic achievement as demonstrated in the two most recent school reports

  • Possible student interview based on performance in the HAST test.

  • Student will be asked to complete a Personal Reflection Statement if they proceed to interview.

AUSTRALIAN CITIZENSHIP AND RESIDENCY STATUS

Candidates must be Australian citizens or holders of a visa granting permanent resident status in Australia.

Citizens of New Zealand are eligible for selective high school entry. Permanent residents of New Zealand are considered in the same manner as temporary residents of Australia and are not normally eligible.

If you do not meet these residency requirements at the time of applying but expect to meet them by the time offers are made, you are allowed to apply provided you are already living in Australia.

If your application is successful, you must show original documentation, such as a Certificate of Evidence of Australian Citizenship, birth certificates or visas, before the school can enrol your child. Your child’s offer may be cancelled if it is based on false or misleading information.

RESIDENTIAL ADDRESS

Your family must be living in NSW by the beginning of the 2023 school year. If your family normally lives in NSW but you are temporarily out of the state, you should expect to return before the student is enrolled in a selective high school. 

If you continue to live outside NSW after the 2023 school year begins your application will be considered only if there are vacancies remaining after all suitable applicants from NSW have been placed.

Q: How many students gained entry to Sydney Technical High School from Years 8 – 11 in 2022?

In 2022 at Sydney Technical High School there were 5 places offered to new students in Year 8, 9 places in Year 9, 2 places in Year 10 and 10 places offered in Year 11. This varies each year depending on availability, as new students will be considered for enrolment ONLY if a current student leaves the school.

Q: What if my student is unable to sit the HAST on Saturday 06 August?

If your student misses the HAST at Sydney Technical High School, there is no refund available for your application fee. Unfortunately there are no alternate dates for the test.
